MSR Data Loggers on the way to the International Space Station ISS

Dear [Anrede,fallback=] [fullname,fallback=],

For the forth consecutive time, the miniature data logging devices of MSR Electronics GmbH are accompanying the flights of the unmanned cargo spacecraft „Cygnus“ to the International Space Station ISS to take transport measurements.

Spectacular data

„We are getting truly spectacular data from these tiny data loggers“, says Michael Bain, ISS Cargo Integration and Operations Services Manager of the Orbital Sciences Corporation. NASA, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration of the United States of America, contracts with Orbital Sciences Corporation for commercial cargo delivery to the International Space Station.

Monitoring of the cargo compartment

The MSR165 data loggers are being used in order to record shock and vibrations on the transport route of the supply transporter Cygnus to the ISS. Some of the cargo is sensitive to the loads imparted during transportation, especially during launch where structural loads and vibrations can be significant. The highly sensitive 3-axis-acceleration sensors of the MSR data logger measure the G forces, during the entire space flight until the transporter docks with the ISS, and records the data in their internal memory. These records allow the crew to determine whether critical strains have been applied to the partly highly sensitive freight goods.

Swiss Television SRF reported in its economy show „Eco“ regarding the extraterrestrial uses of the MSR165 data loggers.

Best practice evidence for transport of medical devices:

Use of MSR Data Loggers at Uroviva Services AG

Professional transport of sensitive, high-tech medical devices within operating rooms and between hospitals and clinics requires high level of competence and modern transport logistics. Swiss company Uroviva Services AG specializes in transport of medical devices and uses MSR165 data loggers from MSR Electronics GmbH for quality assurance. Using the data loggers they can verify when and where the cargo has been subjected to shocks and whether their intensity may have affected the smooth functioning of the highly sensitive, high-tech devices.

Swiss Television SRF also reported about the use of the data loggers at Uroviva.

CTI research project: Transporting fragile paintings – developing new processes for efficient damping of shocks and vibrations

What type of packaging will best protect valuable artwork during shipping? The interdisciplinary CTI-research team made up of specialists in Conservation and Restoration (KUR) at Bern University of Applied Sciences (BFH)/Bern University of the Arts (BUA) and the Institute for Mechatronic Systems (ifms) at BFH-TI in Burgdorf, Switzerland, deals with this issue in their current research study.

Paintings are particularly sensitive to mechanical loads during transportation. Shock and vibration immissions can be transmitted to the textile base and may result in damage to the textile base and the paint layers. To study how well the various packaging systems damped the agitation caused by the lorries, MSR165 data loggers were fastened to the test paintings, to the outside of the packaging and to the cargo areas of the lorries. The findings are expected to reveal the advantages and disadvantages of the various packaging methods and highlight steps that can be taken for further improvement.

Protect your goods during transport!

Whether you are exporting machinery with a value of several hundred thousand Euros all over the world or shipping other sensitive or especially valuable goods: Precise ware transport records using data loggers simplify early damage recognition, and ensures clarity in liability matters.

Was the climate too moist or hot for the product during transport, did the wares suffer critical damage when being moved to the freighter, or was the package opened by unauthorised persons? MSR data loggers employ sensors to record every critical detail, without gaps and with a time stamp. The recorded measuring data also help you in correctly assessing the transport strains on your goods, allowing you to optimise the packaging, shipping mode, shipping means and transport routes.
